Walk through the process with James Belt, our guide, for more information on this quick and easy story style!

The long text story style guide

  • You've already identified the components of your story; to review, they are:

    1. A character

    2. Who wants something

    3. But can’t have it because of an obstacle

    4. And has already attempted on their own

    5. Meets a guide (Jesus or perhaps someone Jesus sent) that helped the character overcome the obstacle, by giving them a plan

    6. And calls them to action

    7. To avoid failure and experience success

    8. And experience transformation

We’re going to add one more component to our story for this format: the hook.

Think about the stakes of the story. What’s the failure you’re trying to avoid? Why does the character want the thing they desire? What’s the part of your story that will make people most curious or interested?

Lead with your hook, and then write out the rest of your story! Use as many or as few words as it takes.

  • Here are some tips to keep in mind as you organize your thoughts:

    1. Don’t just tell us what happened, put us in your shoes as it happens. Tell us how you feel, what you hear or see. Tell us why this moment matters!

    2. It’s okay to write everything that comes to mind on the first pass, but then go back through and trim down the excess parts of the story. You can use as many words as it takes- but don’t use more than needed, either. Make sure everything you say moves us closer to your transformation- to the experience of failure or success at the end of the story.

  • Post your story into a safe environment — click here for an invitation to the One Journey private Facebook group or, if you prefer, click here for an invite to the private Discord server for feedback and encouragement.

    1. This is a great way to get feedback from people just like you on the One Journey

    2. It’s also a great way to conquer nerves

    3. Feel free to make any revisions you might need and post more versions to the group!

  • Now share your story. You can post it to social media, a blog, email it to someone, or print it out and mail it! Your story is going to change lives!
