The Short video story style
If social media is where you spend the most time interacting with others, the Short Video story style is an excellent way to share your story! It’s simple, easy to make, and gives you an opening to start a genuine conversation with many people all in one piece of media. Walk through the process with James Belt, our guide, for more information on this quick and easy story style!
Short video Story Guide
-
You've already identified the components of your story; to review, they are:
A character
Who wants something
But can’t have it because of an obstacle
And has already attempted on their own
Meets a guide (Jesus or perhaps someone Jesus sent) that helped the character overcome the obstacle, by giving them a plan
And calls them to action
To avoid failure and experience success
And experience transformation
Write each component in a single sentence so that you can boil it down to the essentials.
-
Film your story!
Install TikTok (If you don’t plan to use TikTok or post there, go to settings and privacy —> private account)
Choose a spot to film
Lighting - look for a well-lit space that doesn’t have light far above you so you don’t get shadows in your eyes. Windows or floor lamps are ideal. Modern phone cameras in general do a pretty good job of evening out shadows anyway.
Sound - try to avoid “busy” sounds like birds chirping, cars going by, kids playing or talking, etc. Refrigerator hums, A/C sounds, and so on aren’t that big of a deal for a video like this.
-
Click the “create” button
Make sure to flip the camera around if you need to
Choose a duration (15s, 60s, 3m). You don’t have to nail this number exactly, this is just the longest your video can be. We recommend using 60s to start with.
-
One at a time, record each component of your story! Use the red button to start and stop recording!
Look at your first two components - your character and what they want. This will be the first clip.
The next two components - the obstacle and what they've tried in order to get past it - will be the second clip.
Meeting the guide and getting the plan will be clip number three.
Getting called to action is the fourth clip.
The results and what they learned are your fifth clip!
If you don’t like a clip, hit the back arrow and choose “discard the last clip.” This will only discard the last clip you took, not the whole video.
Press the red checkmark to preview your video.
If you need to change anything, use the back arrow at the top of your screen.
If you’re satisfied, click “next” at the bottom right of your screen
If you’re actually planning to use TikTok to share your story, fill out the metadata for your video.
Click “post.” Remember, if your account is private you don’t have to worry that anybody will see it yet!
Download the video by opening it, clicking the 3 dots button, and choosing “save to device.”
